The construction is believed to date back to the 16th century, though there is documented evidence of this votive building from 1601. Originally Gothic in layout, the little church was architecturally transformed in the 18th century; it still preserves a fine 17th‑century holy water stoup and two 18th‑century lamps. On the masonry altar stands a plaster reproduction of the Baptism of Jesus. What truly makes this church an unmissable stop is its location, offering one of the most beautiful views of the Julian Alps. If you are walking to this church on the day of the summer solstice, that is June 23, you are in luck; at night you can witness two very ancient traditional rites: making St. John’s bouquet and lighting the kries, sacred fires in his honor. On his night, the saint passes through the villages and blesses the houses where the bouquet of herbs has been displayed.
