Churches

the hidden treasures of Slavia Friulana

Dabs of white on the summits of green and wooded mountains: this is how the numerous votive churches scattered across the territory of the Natisone Valleys/Nediške Doline appear to the eyes of the tourist who glimpses them from afar. It is worth approaching these true monuments of architecture and sacred art from the 12th to the 16th century, often embellished by skilled artists of Slovenian school.

Stone, wood, gold: these are the materials with which the faith of the westernmost Slavs of Europe is plastically rendered.

Stone

Stone is what characterises the facades of these buildings, rough, hard, and rooted on the slopes of these mountains like the soul of the mountaineers, but it is also the sculpted and chiseled stone of the interiors, where angelic faces, now ecstatically turned towards paradise, now with suffering, patience, and participation in human events, project the visitor and the pilgrim into the spiritual imagination of the Slavic world.

Wood

Wood is the simple and humble one of the exposed beams and the tiles that embellish the roofs, but also that sumptuously carved wood of the altars, true and proper treatises of "plastic" and popular theology, through the representation of the lives of Saints and biblical episodes.

Gold

Gold is the precious substance that characterises many of the splendid altars of these votive chapels. However, if we abandon the material and superficial level, a visit to these extraordinary places of spirituality can reveal an even more precious metal, forged over millennia: the ancient wisdom of knowing how to live of a people who were at the same time peasant (deeply rooted in a barren land but from which they knew how to draw the best), warrior (because they defended the borders of the Serenissima Republic of Venice in exchange for wide autonomy) but also open to distant worlds through small trades (the so-called Guziranje, which extended eastwards to the extremes of Russia).
