Chiesetta di San Bartolomeo
This is the first of the 44 Votive Chapels we encounter along our Cammino. From this place, a small passage opens that will lead you into the mysterious world of the Valleys. Dating back to the late 1400s, it was restored in the 16th century in Slovene Gothic style by artists of the Škofja Loka school.
The façade is topped by a belfry with two openings and a cross on the ridge. The rectangular nave features an exposed wooden beam ceiling and pointed-arch windows on the right side. It is separated from the presbytery by an ogival triumphal arch. The apse has a ribbed vault in the “flamboyant Gothic” style with decorated bosses and corbels supported by capitals carved with human figures.
Standing out are the cycle of frescoes with figures of the Saints (the Apostles’ sequence), dated 1530–1535, by the painter Jernej of Škofja Loka/Bartolomeo of Škofja Loka, and the splendid gilded wooden altarpiece, “Slati Oltari,” richly decorated, by the master carver Jernej Vrtar/Bartolomeo of Caporetto, from 1689.
