The Cammino of the
44 Votive Churches

To promote a vast artistic heritage almost entirely unknown to the general public. In our churches you will find works of art and architectural pieces of very high value, known only to locals and a few connoisseurs. It is therefore about rediscovering “pearls” that sometimes leave one speechless, so enchanting are they to the visitor.

Reaching these chapels, preferably in a “slow” way—on foot, by bike or on horseback—allows you to immerse yourself in the material and spiritual culture of the people of Slavia Friulana. Crossing the territory, often over steep slopes, one can understand the harshness of the past mountain dwellers’ work; but by spotting the artificial terraces and signs of the intense human transformation of these mountains one can also understand how precious this land was, even if ungrateful and unproductive, for the survival of local communities.

Upon arriving at the churches, one can “breathe” the spirituality of these communities, woven with trust in the saints during the hardships of life and with deep gratitude for all of nature’s gifts.

In the votive chapels of the Natisone Valleys, skilled artists from the Slovenian school of Škofja Loka worked, bringing artistic influences from Central Europe. Thus, following these routes has a European scope… a demonstration of how the Natisone Valleys are a true window onto the Slavic world opened to the West.

Finally, but no less importantly, the votive chapels are often located in the most scenic and naturalistic spots of Slavia Friulana. Reaching them is truly enjoyable and, at times, surprising.
