Chiesetta di San Nicolò

On 27 October 1917, Italian troops retreating from the Kolovrat under the pressure of the Caporetto offensive, surrounded in a pincer movement by German troops coming from Tribil Superiore and San Leonardo, entrenched themselves around the little chapel.

Four German commemorative crosses and an Italian inscription on the façade recall the victims of that tragic and bloody battle. The history of this chapel is very complex: the original Romanesque chapel dates to 1249, expanded in the following centuries in Gothic style and restored in 1525 after seismic events. The chapel took on its current form during the eighteenth century, also with the addition of a portico. The nave is rectangular with an exposed beam ceiling; the marble altar is the work of the Cividale artists Leo and Pio Morandini and the painter Giacomo Bront (1959). Inside you can also admire a large wooden statue of Saint Nicholas, made in the manner of Domenico da Tolmezzo (15th–16th centuries).
