Canalaz di Liessa

Chiesetta di San Martino

The earliest historical records of a chapel on the summit of Mount San Martino date back to 1299. The building underwent many renovations (one of the consecrations bears the date 1485), yet its constructional unity is noteworthy, especially its porch with two different openings: one arched and one square. The dedication to Saint Martin (a warrior saint) is recent, and his 19th‑century wooden statue was housed in the niche above the new altar, now empty.

The extraordinary panoramic beauty of the site has always made it a point of reference not only spiritually but also militarily: in 1848, for example, it served as headquarters for 700 Austrian soldiers camped nearby during the War of Independence.
