Chiesetta di San Giovanni Battista
This ancient hypogean church stands at 348 m a.s.l.; after taking the small lane, you must climb 86 steps to reach it. Recent research has revealed remains of earlier chapels dating to the 12th–13th centuries. The reconstruction of the chapel is securely dated to 1477 and bears the signatures of its authors: Andrej von Lach and Jacob, perhaps his stonecutter. Antro was also struck by the earthquakes of the early sixteenth century, and the chapel—repaired again—was rebuilt in 1547 or 1568.
Upon entering, on the right, you find the small chapel in Carinthian–Slovene style. The altar was replaced in the 17th century by a wooden crucifix. In the center of the nave rises the large wooden altar by Jernej Vrtov of Kobarid (Caporetto) from the early 18th century: the titular saints are recognizable—the Baptist and Saint Stephen. The tympanum contains the Coronation of Mary between the Archangel Gabriel and the Annunciation scene. On the left wall, go and observe the small fresco depicting the Veil of Veronica, attributed to Jernej of Loka (16th century).
