Chiesetta di San Michele Arcangelo
The cult of the Archangel Michael defeating Lucifer in a duel is very ancient, dating back to the early Christian era, and is often linked to churches on mountain peaks. It is likely that there was once a small votive shrine dedicated to the saint here.
The church is small and simple, decorated with a biforate window at the top, but its location (this was a stop along the Major Rogations) indicates the importance it must have had. After the earthquakes of the early sixteenth century, the church was reconsecrated in 1545 by the patriarchal vicar Bisanti. It was restored in 1873. Enclosed in the altar’s case is a beautiful nineteenth‑century statue, originally carved in rowan wood, depicting Saint Michael.
