Merso Superiore

Chiesetta di Sant’Antonio Abate

Right where the ridge begins that separates the Cosizza and Erbezzo valleys, near Merso di Sopra, there is an important historic site for Slavia Friulana: the church of St. Anthony Abbot. Under centuries-old linden trees, the Banca di Merso (twin to that of Antro), a self-governing body for the Natisone valleys, used to meet here. Certainly already consecrated in 1444, the church was fully frescoed by 1493, as indicated by an inscription in the chancel. Inside, there is a rectangular nave with a marble altar from 1795, the work of Francesco Aloy from Gemona, which replaced the wooden one. During restoration, a fresco was uncovered showing the saint with a boar at his feet; there is also a beautiful canvas depicting Mary with the Child.
